Hospice Volunteer Training

Two-day training on July 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on

July 17 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Hospice is a team-oriented approach to end-of-life care, and JSSA volunteers play a key role in helping us address our patients’ needs and wishes. In 2016, our 190 specially-trained volunteers made more than 5,000 visits to Hospice patients and Transitions clients, providing compassionate support by:

  • Reading aloud
  • Playing games
  • Sharing stories about travel, cooking, gardening and more
  • Documenting important memories
  • Playing musical instruments or singing
  • Bringing certified therapy pets
  • Offering massage therapy
  • Going on brief excursions

Volunteers also assist nurses and social workers by observing patients for signs of physical and emotional changes. By providing vigil care, Hospice volunteers ensure that patients with terminal illnesses are never alone at the very end.

Specialized Training for Volunteers

Prospective Hospice and Transitions volunteers are required to attend our specialized two-day training and encouraged to participate in ongoing training sessions. Following the initial training, volunteers are asked to commit to visiting patients at least 2 hours per week for a year. In addition, we have found it beneficial for individuals to wait one year following the death of a loved one before becoming a volunteer with JSSA Hospice and Transitions.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and complete an application and interview before participating in the specialized training. No walk-ins allowed. Registration for the training is accepted up to 5 days prior to the start of the course.
