This training provides 3 Category I CE’s
Presented by: Marie Nicolini, MD, MSc
Laws regulating euthanasia and/or physician-assisted suicide (EAS) are rapidly evolving. In the US, an increasing number of states is legalizing the practice (also referred to as death with dignity or physician-assisted death), for terminally and physically ill persons.
Some European countries like the Netherlands and Belgium have had laws in place for almost two decades, allowing EAS regardless of proximity to death. This talk will provide an overview of the current legal landscape around the world. Next, it will focus on two of the more controversial areas, namely EAS for persons with psychiatric disorders and with dementia, respectively. Empirical data will be presented about the practice in the Netherlands. Finally, the policy challenges of these practices for countries like the US will be discussed.
