Young Adult Groups
Cool, Calm and Connected: A Young Adult Social Skills Therapy Group
For young adults ages 19-25 who have Asperger’s syndrome or related challenges, have earned a High School diploma, and are enrolled in and/or have attended college. Participants will focus on understanding others and improving their own non-verbal communication, building social confidence and conversation skills, and managing difficult emotions through modeling, discussion, role-play and peer support.
When: Mondays, June 18-August 20; 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Going Places! Social Club for Young Adults with Asperger's Syndrome and Related Disorders-MD
For young adults ages 18-30. Participants will be encouraged to engage with their peers in a fun and stimulating environment. Activities include local field trips, games, art projects, movies, dining out, etc. Group members will also be encouraged to suggest new ideas for other weekend outings.
When: Monthly; Sundays, May 20, June 24, July 15 and August 19, 2012, Times TBA

Adult Groups
Cool, Calm and Connected: A Social Skills Therapy Group for Adults
This therapy group is for adults with autism spectrum and related disorders aged 19 and older, who have completed high school. It will provide opportunities for participants to understand and improve their social interactions. Participants will discuss and practice skills to develop and strengthen connections with family members, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances.
When: 12 sessions: June 19-August 21, 2012; 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Deaf Adult Relationship Group
For adults ages 25 and over. This 8-session group provides an opportunity to share joy and sorrows, hopes and fears, coping mechanisms and strategies for improving relationships.
When: 8 sessions: Thursdays, June 7-August 2, 2012; No class July 5; 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Family Member Monthly Hoarding Support Group
Co-sponsored by the Gaithersburg Task Force on Hoarding. This monthly support group offers those with a relative with hoarding behaviors an opportunity to meet in a friendly, confidential environment. The group is facilitated by a clinical social worker with many years of experience in the area of hoarding and with family caregivers.
When: 4th Tuesday of every month; 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Making Marriage Work
Couples who are considering marriage or are already engaged have just one wish - that their marriage be successful and last a lifetime. Studies show that couples who participate in a pre-marital program significantly reduce their chance of divorce. This program help couples learn the necessary skills to strengthen relationships and create successful families. The series explores healthy communication, conflict resolution, the influence of personality traits and family origin, the expectation of love and commitment, money management, division of labor and family life.

This interactive workshop enables parents of young children to understand and manage their children’s behavior. Topics include: temperament, managing meltdowns, fostering self-control, conflict management, strengthening parent-child relationships and building peer interactions.

Suicide Grief Support Group
Bi-monthly support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Facilitated by a JSSA clinician with specialized training and experience in grief following suicide, the group offers a respectful and supportive setting for gaining insight and sharing feelings.

Moving Up and Out!: Life Readiness Skills for Young Adults with Asperger's Syndrome and Related Disorders
This workshop is for men and women ages 19-30 with Asperger’s Syndrome and Related Disorders who are interested in developing life skills to promote independence. Topics to be explored include: organization and time management, budgeting and money management, personal hygiene, written and verbal communication skills, as well as smart shopping and cooking. A brief assessment is required prior to the first session.

Sandwich Generations: How to successfully balance caring for aging parents and yourself
This workshop series explores topics relevant to caring for aging parents, yourself and your own families. The first half of each session has an educational component and the second half will be structured in a support group format where participants can give and receive recommendations, learn strategies and share personal experiences.
