JSSA Growth and Learning Programs - Winter/Spring 2010

For: Children, teens, adults, seniors, families and individuals with special needs.

Service description: Whether a social skills therapy group for 6-year-olds with Asperger's syndrome; a 10-session program to help parents develop effective behavioral strategies for challenging children; a memory-coaching workshop for older adults; or a weekly bereavement group for adults grieving the loss of a loved one, JSSA's Growth and Learning Programs provide the opportunity for anyone in our community struggling with a wide range of learning, behavioral, emotional and physical challenges to learn from our highly skilled professionals and to share with others who are facing similar challenges. JSSA offers ongoing groups throughout the year with new groups forming in the winter, spring, summer and fall:*

Please note: JSSA does not maintain waiting lists for any groups that have been filled. If there are no groups available this session for your child, and you would like to be added to our mailing list to receive future Growth and Learning Programs brochures, please click here.

Payment: Information about JSSA's fees and charges is available upon request. JSSA accepts full fee as well as most insurance and managed care plans for this service. JSSA also accepts Medicare and Medicaid and can provide financial assistance on a sliding fee scale based on need.

Child and Teen Social Skills Therapy Groups

***Please note: All Rockville children's social skills therapy groups will now be held at the Ina Kay Building, 200 Wood Hill Road.

In small groups, children who have difficulty in social situations learn appropriate social behaviors, such as initiating and maintaining conversation, listening, sharing, problem-solving, self-control, dealing with teasing and emotions, and making friends. The fees for these groups range from $65-$75 per session (and some may be insurance-reimbursable). There is a $15 materials fee for the "JSSA Social Skills Guide for Parents," designed especially to help parents reinforce skills at home.

Kids Can Cope!
A Children of Divorce Group

Through four interactive group sessions, children (ages 10-13) will learn that they are not
alone in the divorce process. Role-playing, artwork, letter writing, self-esteem exercises
and verbalization of feelings provide the tools for them to remain hopeful and positive.

Special Summer Social Skills Programs
2-week intensive camp

This exciting program is based on the latest research, proven methods for improving children’s social skills, and JSSA's successful Social Skill Therapy model. The camp’s mission is to improve each child’s ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with peers and builds a solid foundation for making and keeping friends within a relaxed, fun and creative environment. Social skills topics covered will include friendly behaviors: initiation of friendships, listening, taking turns and sharing; inhibition and delay; anger management; impulse and emotional self-control; making conversation, responding to others, working as a team; handling teasing, and relaxation/stress management. This camp program is appropriate for children who can benefit from learning and practicing social skills but who can also participate successfully in less-structured activities. Typically developing children with social skills deficits, children with social challenges related to anxiety disorders, children with ADHD and high functioning Asperger’s may be appropriate for this camp program. All potential campers will be interviewed to assure that the BFF Camp at SummerEdge is appropriate for their needs. The admission process will include a child interview. Download the flyer.

JSSA and the JCC of Northern Virginia present: Camp Shalom
This exciting program for children with ADD/ADHD and Asperger's syndrome is based on the latest research, proven methods for improving children’s social skills, and JSSA’s successful Social Skills Therapy model. The camp’s mission is to improve each child’s ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with peers and build a solid foundation for making and keeping friends within a relaxed, fun and creative environment. The camp day includes morning therapy sessions and afternoon focus on programs to reinforce what was learned and help build social connections.
Admission Process: Applications are dated and time stamped. Interviews will be conducted in February and March with each child submitting an application. Counselors from both JSSA and JCCNV will participate in each interview. Families will be notified of acceptance into camp after the interview and application have been completed.
Social skills topics covered include:

  • Friendly behaviors: initiation of friendships, listening, taking turns and sharing
  • Making conversation, responding to others, working as a team
  • Impulse and emotional self-control

  • Anger management

Cool, Calm and Connected: Young Adult Social Skills
This ten-session group is designed for young men and women ages 19-29 who may have PDD, Asperger's or related challenges, and are working toward transitioning successfully to work, further education, the post-high school social life, and greater independence. This safe and supportive group addresses the issues of adults who have atypical neurological development affecting their social skills, combined with typical or above-average levels of achievement and performance in other areas, yet often feel they do not “fit in.” Group members have the opportunity to identify their feelings, strengths and challenges, and develop concrete goals targeting specific areas to improve (e.g., in college, work, family life, and the community). This group allows members to increase self-awareness, self-acceptance, coping strategies, and ability to solve problems and advocate for their needs. In January and early February, new members will be seen individually for an initial assessment to determine if this group is likely to be the best one for their needs.

Sibling Support Workshop

Making Marriage Work: A Premarital Workshop for Strengthening Relationships and Families
JSSA’s six-session Making Marriage Work program is designed for couples who are considering marriage, are engaged or married less than one year. This nationally acclaimed program was developed more than 25 years ago and has provided thousands of couples the skills necessary to strengthen their relationships and create successful families. Studies show that couples who have completed a pre-marital course have, on average, more successful marriages. JSSA’s team of experienced, licensed therapists is committed to teaching couples how to successfully negotiate the test of time and lead sessions on all aspects of married life including:
The expectations of love and commitment
The influence of personality traits and family of origin*
Communication skills
Conflict resolution
Sexuality and marriage
Money management
Division of labor

Family life

*Couples also complete an attitude, values and personality inventory that helps them grasp a deeper understanding of their views and preferences on many important issues. These inventories are reviewed in a private session with the counselor.

Considering Separation and Divorce: Legal and Financial Essentials
Learn how to “untie the knot” with the guidance of experts. This program will present the financial, legal and emotional issues of separation and divorce as well as an introduction to and discussion of collaborative divorce—a non-adversarial approach to separation that focuses on addressing the well-being of both the adults and their children and commits to resolving all issues outside of court. The program will include presentations by a financial planner, attorney and divorce coach.

A Children of Divorce Group

Through four interactive group sessions, children (ages 10-13) will learn that they are not
alone in the divorce process. Role-playing, artwork, letter writing, self-esteem exercises
and verbalization of feelings provide the tools for them to remain hopeful and positive.

Support Group for Newly Widowed Spouses
JSSA is offering a bereavement support group, led by a therapist, which is open to the entire community. This group is for adults who have lost a spouse or partner in the past year. Prospective members are requested to wait to join until two or three months have passed since the death. Members are welcome to attend for approximately one year after joining. No charge.
