Winter and Spring 2010 Post-Graduate and Continuing Education Programs

JSSA offers two post-graduate courses annually.

These courses emphasize the biopsychosocial approach and are taught by an interdisciplinary faculty of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers from area research, academic and care institutions. The curriculum of the child and adolescent course addresses normal child development, psychopathology, principles of assessment, techniques of psychotherapy, psychopharmacology and case presentations. The adult course covers biological research and etiologies of a range of mental disorders, assessment approaches, psychopathology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy techniques and case presentations.

Child and Adolescent Assessment and Treatment: A Biopsychosocial Approach, a 6-month, 57 CEU Program for mental health professionals

The program utilizes research from the neurosciences, child and adolescent psychiatry, clinical psychology and social work. Through lectures, readings and case presentations, this program will provide a highly innovative, state-of-the-art integration of current research and effective treatment approaches.

Objectives:

  • To introduce clinicians to the rapidly advancing knowledge base in the biological, genetic and psychosocial aspects of child and adolescent mental disorders.
  • To train clinicians to complete thorough evaluations of child and adolescent clients and to develop comprehensive treatment plans.
  • To train clinicians in treatment modalities most appropriate for a child or adolescent's condition.


Selection of Students:
This training program is designed for LCSW-Cs, LGSWs, psychologists, professional counselors, and other health professionals. Applicants are asked to submit a resume. Phone interview required.

Adult Assessment and Treatment: A Biopsychosocial Approach.

This program is eligible for 40 CEUs. (*This course will return in Fall 2010.)

Early Childhood Program: Early Development, Psychopathology, and Treatment of Infants and Young Children, a six-session, 18 CEU program for early childhood professionals

Objectives:

  • To become familiar with the Diagnostic Classification: 0-3 Revised (DC: 0-3R) as a diagnostic tool that guides understanding and treatment of young children aged birth to five years and their families.
  • To understand the meaning of child-specific disruptive behavior disorders using the DC: 0-3R with special focus on how co-occurring diagnoses guide understanding and treatment.
  • To become familiar with new research in neurodevelopment that guides understanding and treatment of children with typical development and those with behavior disorders.
  • To gain a better understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of six subtypes of feeding disorders
  • To understand and treat young children with problems in self-regulation, feeding and sleep.

On-site Bi-monthly CEU Trainings

NOW OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY!

JSSA is pleased to offer mental health professionals in the community access to its bimonthly in-house Category 1 staff CEU training sessions. The three hour sessions will be presented by a variety of mental health professionals expert in their fields from the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Sessions will include a wide variety of topics related to children, adolescents, adults and seniors.

February 2, 2010: Clinical Suicidology: Assessment and Treatment of the Person At-Risk for Suicide.**
A training for mental health professionals and other health professionals
presented by: Alan Berman, Ph.D., Executive Director, American Association of Suicidology and nationally recognized expert in suicide prevention

April 20, 2010: Understanding and Treating Hoarding Behavior in Older Adults.
A training for mental health professionals and other health professionals presented by: Henriette Kellum, LCSW, well-known aging expert with a specialty in treating hoarding behavior.

Training times: 9:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Fees: $60/per 3-hour session. $50/per 3-hour session for groups of 4 or more.

Training Institute Policies

Tuition payment for each course is due either the week before the commencement of the course or at the first class.

In the event that an enrolled student requests a withdrawal from the course before the first session of the program, tuition will be refunded less a $50 processing fee.

If a student enters training and withdraws or discontinues attendance in the training prior to completion of the scheduled program, the Training Institute shall refund the student a prorated amount of the remaining tuition less 10%. If seventy-five percent (75%) of the scheduled program has already been completed no refund will be made.

In order to receive CEU credits and to complete the course, attendance at 80% of the sessions is required.

JSSA reserves the right to cancel any course, seminar or workshop that does not reach minimum enrollment. In such cases, registrants will be notified and all fees submitted will be refunded in full.

Symposia
JSSA traditionally holds an annual day-long professional symposia in Maryland for social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, counselors, educators and other health professionals.

The primary goal of these symposia is to improve the quality of mental health care by providing the latest available information and research to enhance treatment and service delivery. Not only do hundreds of professionals benefit from these annual events – many parents also participate, enhancing their understanding and skills in dealing with their own children.

Collaborative Problem Solving: Teaching, Treating and Parenting Challenging Children and Adolescents
presented by: Ross W. Greene, Ph.D.

Ross W. Greene, Ph.D., is the originator of the Collaborative Problem Solving approach and author of the recently released book, Lost At School: Why Our Most Vulnerable, At-Risk Kids Still Fall Through The Cracks and How We Can Help Them. He is also author of the highly acclaimed book, The Explosive Child. Dr. Greene is Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. His research has been funded by the Stanley Research Institute, the National Institutes of Mental Health, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Maine Juvenile Justice Advisory Group. He consults extensively to families, general and special education schools, inpatient psychiatry units, and residential and juvenile detention facilities, and lectures widely throughout the world.
Description: Based on research in the neurosciences over the past 30 years, Dr. Greene’s Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) psychosocial treatment model posits that challenging behavior is a form of developmental delay and the byproduct of lagging cognitive skills in the global domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem-solving. CPS helps adults and kids solve the problems precipitating challenging behavior and simultaneously teach kids the skills they’re lacking. The model, which represents a dramatic departure from conventional wisdom and practice, has been found to be highly effective in an array of settings, including families, general and special education schools, therapeutic group homes, and inpatient, residential, and juvenile detention facilities. Participants in this workshop will leave with an understanding of the underpinnings of the CPS model and practical assessment and intervention tools that can be brought back to and used in these diverse settings.
Symposium Objectives*
Participants will learn:

  • How different explanations for and interpretations of challenging behavior in kids can lead to dramatically different approaches to intervention, and why conventional reward and punishment procedures may not be effective for many challenging kids
  • To identify and assess the various cognitive skills that are central to handling life’s social, emotional, and behavioral challenges
  • To identify and prioritize unsolved problems precipitating challenging behavior
  • The three basic mechanisms by which adults handle problems and unmet expectations in kids (Plans A, B, and C) and what is accomplished by each, and the three steps or “ingredients” of Plan B
  • How to effectively implement Plan B to develop a helping relationship, solve problems, teach lagging cognitive skills, and reduce the frequency and intensity of challenging behavior in schools, homes, and restrictive therapeutic facilities
