Service descriptionJSSA, as a leading provider of sophisticated mental health services and a highly respected learning institution, reaches out to hundreds of mental health, medical and school personnel each year through its: 

Post-graduate programs

JSSA offers two post-graduate courses annually.

These courses emphasize the biopsychosocial approach and are taught by an interdisciplinary faculty of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers from area research, academic and care institutions.  The curriculum of the child and adolescent course addresses normal child development, psychopathology, principles of assessment, techniques of psychotherapy, psychopharmacology and case presentations. The adult course covers biological research and etiologies of a range of mental disorders, assessment approaches, psychopathology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy techniques and case presentations.

Register Now for the January-June 2009 Session! Child and Adolescent Assessment and Treatment: A Biopsychosocial Approach. This program is eligible for 60 CEUs. The fee is $1,050 for the 6 month program.

Save the Date for the 2009 Fall Session! September-December*:   Adult Assessment and Treatment: A Biopsychocial Approach. This program is eligible for 40 CEUs. The fee is $900 for the 4 month program. (*Check back in the summer for more details...)

JSSA announces this
new six-session, 18 CEU program for mental health professionals: Early Development, Psychopathology and Treatment of Infants and Young Children

Objectives:

• To become familiar with the Diagnostic Classification: 0-3 Revised (DC: 0-3R) as a diagnostic tool that
guides understanding and treatment of young children aged birth to five years and their families.
• To understand the meaning of child-specific disruptive behavior disorders using the DC: 0-3R with
special focus on how co-occurring diagnoses guide understanding and treatment.
• To become familiar with new research in neurodevelopment that guides understanding and treatment
of children with typical development and those with behavior disorders.
• To gain a better understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of six subtypes of feeding disorders.
• To understand and treat young children with problems in self-regulation, feeding and sleep.

Selection of Students:

Applicants are asked to submit a résumé.

Save the Date for the Fall 2009 Session! September-December*:   JSSA's four-session, 12 CEU program for mental health professionals will include sessions covering new ideas in systems family therapy; psychoeducational family therapy and cognitive-behavioral family therapy with children, adolescents, adults, seniors and their families. The faculty will provide select reading materials prior to each seminar and will use a didactic, case study and discussion format.(*Check back in the summer for more details...)

On-site Bi-monthly CEU Trainings

NOW OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY! 

JSSA is pleased to offer mental health professionals in the community access to its bimonthly in-house Category 1 staff CEU training sessions. The three hour sessions will be presented by a variety of mental health professionals expert in their fields from the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Sessions will include a wide variety of topics related to children, adolescents, adults and seniors.

Symposia

JSSA traditionally holds two annual day-long professional symposia in Maryland and Northern Virginia for social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, counselors, educators and other health professionals.

The primary goal of these symposia is to improve the quality of mental health care by providing the latest available information and research to enhance treatment and service delivery. Not only do hundreds of professionals benefit from these annual events – many parents also participate, enhancing their understanding and skills in dealing with their own children.

Save the Date!  JSSA Spring 2009 Symposium, Adolescent and Adult Eating Disorders...What's New in Research, Diagnosis and Treatment, Wednesday, March 18, 2009, from 8:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m., 4H Center in Chevy Chase, MD (7100 Connecticut Avenue).

Featured presenters:  Angela S. Guarda, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; Director, Eating Disorders Program, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Graham W. Redgrave, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; Assistant Director, Eating Disorders Program, Johns Hopkins Hospital.

This day-long symposium is for social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, counselors, educators and other health professionals.

This event will be eligible for 6.0 CEU Credits.
