Joseph Ottenstein Award
In 1959 the Board of Directors of the Jewish Social Service Agency approved the recommendation of a Committee established by the Honorable David L. Bazelon, then president, that the many great community services of Joseph Ottenstein, who had been president of JSSA in 1951, be recognized by the creation of an award bearing his name. The selection is based on outstanding community leadership in the field of “Social Service – Human Service,” a slogan that Mr. Ottenstein coined.
The award is a sculpture commissioned by JSSA from Stephen Cohen, an artist close to Jewish issues. The first recipient was Richard K. Lyon who had been a Board member and who was then active on a broad front of civic matters, both Jewish and non-sectarian. The following are the Ottenstein Award honorees for the last 51 years:

Jac J. Lehrman-George M. Pikser Award
Executive Director George Pikser celebrated 25 years at the helm of JSSA in 1973 and at a testimonial dinner in his honor, the George M. Pikser Award was created to honor a deserving social service or volunteer worker. Five years later, Charlotte Lehrman endowed the award in her husband's memory, and it was renamed the Jac J. Lehrman-George M. Pikser Award.
