"My focus was on helping Lisa, a young adult, lead a life that wasn't defined by her disability. As her case manager, I first coordinated services that would put Lisa on the road to independence. Our comprehensive evaluation identified her strengths and interests, and yes, her weaknesses, too. Then we matched Lisa's unique talents with realistic employment options, and prepared her to start working. Our job-skills training coached her on everything from using a computer to dressing for an interview to working with people. Through our business networks, we helped Lisa find a job, and our ongoing employment support is helping her keep it! All the while, I've continued to coordinate the JSSA counseling, case management, and support services that Lisa and her family need, and to steer them towards community resources that I know can help. Today, Lisa is her own woman and is enjoying a good life. I can't tell you how wonderful that makes us all feel." | | Suspecting Asperger's syndrome, a Fairfax elementary school teacher referred six-year old Rebecca and her parents...
