Going Places! A Social Club for Teens with Asperger's
JSSA and the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia present a social club for teens ages 14-17 with Asperger’s syndrome and related disorders. Group activities are geared towards getting to know each other and building essential social skills.

New! Kids Can Cope
This interactive support group for children of divorce (ages 8-11) will include role playing, artwork, self-esteem exercise and verbalization of feelings to help children remain hopeful and positive.
When: Tuesdays, Mar. 27-Apr. 17, 6:00-7:00 p.m.

This exciting program for children with ADD/ADHD and Asperger’s syndrome is based on the latest research, proven methods for improving children’s social skills, and JSSA’s (Jewish Social Service Agency) successful Social Skill Therapy model. Camp Shalom’s mission is to improve each child’s ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with peers and to build a solid foundation for making and keeping friends within a relaxed, fun and creative environment. The camp day includes morning therapy sessions and afternoon inclusion programs to reinforce what was learned and help build social connections. LCSWs from JSSA along with JCCNV Spe-cial Abilities staff, facilitate the program.

Admission Process: Applications are dated and time-stamped. Each child who submits an application is interviewed. Counselors from both JSSA and JCCNV participate in each interview. Mission: TRS, JSSA, and the JCCNV have combined forces to offer children ages grades 1 through 3 a specialized camp program: Camp Shalom. Campers will enjoy focused social skills workshops in the morning as well as field trips, swimming, specialty classes and more. The mission of Camp Shalom is to improve each child’s ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with peers and build a solid foundation for making and keeping friends.

The social skills curriculum integrates proven methods for improving social skills and is based on JSSA’s successful Social Skills Therapy Model developed by Dr. Stanley Fagen. The camp is being offered in 1 single pilot two 2-week sessions: July 23-August 3, 2012:

  • Week 1: Developing Relationships and Friendly Behaviors
  • Week 2: Maintaining Relationships and Self Control Over Impulses and Emotions

Weekly activities are specifically designed to foster, enhance and reinforce priority skills. Rewards and self-ratings will be utilized to enhance participation and to monitor the acquisition, performance and generalization of skills. This curriculum has been specifically developed for children diagnosed with ADHD or Asperger’s Disorder.

SummerEdge Camp at McLean School of Maryland:
Building & Fostering Friendships (BFF) Entering Grades 1-5

This exciting program is based on the latest research, proven methods for improving children’s social skills, and JSSA’s (Jewish Social Service Agency’s) successful Social Skill Therapy model. The camp’s mission is to improve each child’s ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with peers and builds a solid foundation for making and keeping friends within a relaxed, fun and creative environment. The admission process will include a child interview.

This camp program is appropriate for children who can benefit from learning and practicing social skills but who can also participate successfully in less-structured activities. Typically developing children with social skills deficits, children with social challenges related to anxiety disorders, children with ADHD and high-functioning Asperger’s may be appropriate for this camp program. All potential campers will be interviewed to assure that the BFF Camp at Summer Edge is appropriate for their needs.
