David Bruce Smith, Joseph Ottenstein Honoree

David Bruce Smith

For the past 50 years, the Joseph Ottenstein Award has been presented by JSSA to a community member whose efforts and achievements have improved the life of our community.

David Bruce Smith, JSSA’s 2012 honoree, is the son of Robert H. Smith, a builder, developer, philanthropist and former President of the National Gallery of Art. His mother is the world-renowned artist Clarice Smith. His grandfather was real estate developer and philanthropist, Charles E. Smith.

As a third-generation Smith honoree, David joins his late father, late grandfather and his aunt and uncle, Arlene and Robert Kogod, on the long list of individuals who have been recognized for making our world a better place to live.

David embraces the guiding principles of his family and follows in the philanthropic and leadership tradition passed down by his ancestors.

Through his involvement on the boards of the George Washington University, the Washington, DC Jewish Community Center, Arena Stage and President Lincoln's Cottage, David has quietly become a dominant presence in the DC area’s charitable landscape. On an international level, he is president of the National Institute of Psychobiology in Jerusalem, Israel.

With degrees in American Literature and Journalism, David has used his interests to establish scholarship funds for undergraduate students at George Washington University as well as the school’s "Jewish Literature Live", a course on contemporary Jewish American works of literature that allows students to study and interact with prominent Jewish American authors. The Robert H. Smith Foundation created the David Bruce Smith Education Initiative at Gettysburg in 2009 – a decade of public programs and learning opportunities that will highlight Abraham Lincoln's presidency and legacy. Finally, David is the author of 10 books, including “Conversations with Papa Charlie”, a memoir of the close relationship he had with his grandfather.

David Garibaldi, Performance Artist

David Garibaldi in Action

Set to music, performance artist David Garibaldi creates six foot portraits of pop icons in just minutes. His original portraits range from Albert Einstein and Louis Armstrong to Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

Garibaldi was living the life of a graffiti rebel until a high school teacher challenged him to give his art more purpose. He has since evolved into a world-renowned painter and performer.

Garibaldi has been featured on major networks including ESPN, MTV, NBC and PBS and has toured with Carlos Santana, Snoop Dogg, and the Blue Man Group. In July 2006, he was invited to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to paint a portrait of Mick Jagger.
