Service descriptionJSSA, as a leading provider of sophisticated mental health services and a highly respected learning institution, reaches out to hundreds of mental health, medical and school personnel each year through its: 

Post-graduate programs

JSSA offers two post-graduate courses annually.

These courses emphasize the biopsychosocial approach and are taught by an interdisciplinary faculty of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers from area research, academic and care institutions.  The curriculum of the child and adolescent course addresses normal child development, psychopathology, principles of assessment, techniques of psychotherapy, psychopharmacology and case presentations. The adult course covers biological research and etiologies of a range of mental disorders, assessment approaches, psychopathology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy techniques and case presentations.

Child and Adolescent Assessment and Treatment: A Biopsychosocial Approach. This program is eligible for 60 CEUs. (Check back in the fall for the Spring 2010 program.)

Adult Assessment and Treatment: A Biopsychosocial Approach.This program is eligible for 40 CEUs. (*This course will not be offered in the Fall 2009 Session but will return in Fall 2010.)

Overcoming Anxiety: CBT for Children, Adolescents and Their Parents.  This four-session, 12 CEU program will provide participants with knowledge on Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) strategies for children, adolescents and their families.

Treating Asperger's Syndrome Across the Lifespan. This five-session, 15 CEU program will provide participants with knowledge to treat child, adolescent and adult clients with Asperger's using evidence-based treatment techniques

Family Treatment Program. - This four-session, 12 CEU program for mental health professionals will include sessions covering new ideas in systems family therapy; psychoeducational family therapy and cognitive-behavioral family therapy with children, adolescents, adults, seniors and their families.

Early Childhood Program. Early Development, Psychopathology, and Treatment of Infants and Young Children. This six-session, 18 CEU program for mental health professionals will be offered in Spring 2010.  

On-site Bi-monthly CEU Trainings

NOW OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY! 

JSSA is pleased to offer mental health professionals in the community access to its bimonthly in-house Category 1 staff CEU training sessions. The three hour sessions will be presented by a variety of mental health professionals expert in their fields from the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Sessions will include a wide variety of topics related to children, adolescents, adults and seniors.

Fall 2009 Schedule:

October 6, 2009: From Conflict to Connection: An Introduction to Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Presented by: Scott Wolfe, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist and certified Gottman Method Couples Therapist

December 1, 2009Object Relations Couples and Family Therapy.  Presented by: David E. Scharff, M.D., Co-director of International Psychotherapy Institute, Vice-President of International Association for Couple and Family Psychoanalysis

Training times: 9:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Fees: $60/per 3-hour session. $50/per 3-hour session for groups of 4 or more.

Training Institute Policies

Tuition payment for each course is due either the week before the commencement of the course or at the first class. 

In the event that an enrolled student requests a withdrawal from the course before the first session of the program, tuition will be refunded less a $50 processing fee.

If a student enters training and withdraws or discontinues attendance in the training prior to completion of the scheduled program, the Training Institute shall refund the student a prorated amount of the remaining tuition less 10%. If seventy-five percent (75%) of the scheduled program has already been completed no refund will be made. 

In order to receive full CEU credits for each course, attendance at 80% of the sessions is required.

JSSA reserves the right to cancel any course, seminar or workshop that does not reach minimum enrollment. In such cases, registrants will be notified and all fees submitted will be refunded in full.

Symposia

JSSA traditionally holds two annual day-long professional symposia in Maryland and Northern Virginia for social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, counselors, educators and other health professionals.

The primary goal of these symposia is to improve the quality of mental health care by providing the latest available information and research to enhance treatment and service delivery. Not only do hundreds of professionals benefit from these annual events – many parents also participate, enhancing their understanding and skills in dealing with their own children.

JSSA Fall 2009 Symposium: Helping Kids, Teens and Adults Live Well with ADHD: Practical Solutions, Integrated Treatment Approaches, ADD-Friendly Lifestyles. Thursday, October 15, 2009, from 8:00 a.m.-4:15 p.m., 4H Center in Chevy Chase, MD (7100 Connecticut Avenue).

Featured presenters:

Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D.
, is the Director of the Chesapeake ADHD Center of Maryland. Dr. Nadeau has practiced in the Washington, D.C. area for over thirty years, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD, ADD). She is the co-founder of the National Center for Gender Issues in ADHD, a non-profit organization dedicated to public education and professional training about the needs of girls and women with ADHD. Dr. Nadeau is the author of 10 books on ADHD and is currently at work on a new book, “Raising a Daughter with ADHD“ co-authored with her long-time partner, Patricia Quinn, M.D.

Patricia O. Quinn, M.D., is a developmental pediatrician in the Washington, D.C. area specializing in child development and psychopharmacology. Dr. Quinn has worked for several years in the areas of ADD (ADHD) and learning disabilities and is the co-founder and currently the director of the non-profit organization The National Center for Girls and Women with ADHD. She is the author of several books on ADD (ADHD). For the last decade, Dr. Quinn has devoted her attention professionally to the issues confronting girls and women with ADD (ADHD). Her latest book, "Attention, Girls! A Guide to Learn All About Your ADHD" was released in April, 2009.


This day-long symposium is for social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, counselors, educators and other health professionals.

Symposium Topics:

  • Executive functioning skills in adolescence, college and adulthood
  • Creating an ADD-friendly lifestyle
  • Creating an ADD-friendly family- promoting awareness of ADHD to improve marital relationships and parenting style
  • Self-management of ADHD symptoms
  • Finding the right job match
  • Medication use to treat ADHD-focusing on the new generation of medications

This event will be eligible for 6.0 CEU Credits.

Graduate student social work internships

For many years, JSSA has been the training ground for graduate students in social work from local universities. JSSA continues to offer on-site teaching and training for social work students pursuing their master's, offering exciting clinical internships and supervisions with master clinicians.
