SAFETY NET SERVICES FOR METRO DC HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR COMMUNITY IN CRITICAL NEED OF FUNDING Rockville–April 26, 2012–JSSA's (Jewish Social Service Agency) nearly 20 year old Holocaust Survivor Program is facing critical funding shortfalls this coming year and for the next 10 or more years. Several hundred frail, poor and ill Holocaust survivors reside in the greater DC area. Due to unprecedented increases in survivor applications for services as this population nears the last few years of their life, their growing need for basic safety net services including personal care, homemaker, health, social services, and financial assistance are currently outpacing available funding. Changing demographics, increasing frailty, the downturn in the economy, and changes in eligibility criteria for Claims Conference (CC) funding have contributed to this dire situation.
JSSA is our community’s primary provider of safety net services for the Holocaust survivor community.

In addition, JSSA also facilitates a monthly support group and can provide telephone and periodic email support. Rockville, MD--March 15, 2012--JSSA (the Jewish Social Service Agency), in partnership with B'nai B'rith's Project H.O.P.E and local area synagogues, will assemble and deliver 500 kosher Passover baskets to Jewish individuals and families in the metropolitan Washington DC area who need our assistance to observe Passover. The baskets will include kosher for Passover matzah, gefilte fish, matzah meal, candles and other holiday items.
For thousands of years, around the time of Passover, Jews have given to those in need. The Jews of Ancient Babylon donated wheat so the poor in their communities could have matzah. Two thousand years later, after WWII, American Jews shipped matzah to impoverished communities in Europe, and in the 1970’s, American congregations sent matzah to refuseniks in the USSR. In 2012… who will you feed?
